This series is inspired by the traditional Korean portrait technique “Bae-Chae”, in which pigment is applied to both the front and the back of a translucent sheet. As well as conveying a powerful sense of depth, this technique helps to capture the essence of the subject. Hong has modernised the Bae-Chae method by using abstract forms and colours to express the emotions of a given moment.
