통의동 보안여관은 80여년의 세월동안 ‘여관’이라는 이름 그대로 나그네들을 위한 공간이었다. 머뭄과 떠남이 공존하는 문화생산자들과 문화예술을 사랑하고 향유하는 사람들의 공간이기도 하다. 1936년 지어진 목조여관건물인 통의동 보안여관 구관은 문학동인지 이 만들어진 곳으로 한국근대문학의 발상지이며, 2004년까지 실제 여관으로 많은 문화예술인들이 머물었던 생활문화유적지다. 2007년부터 ‘문화숙박업’ 으로서 생활밀착형, 장소특성적 예술을 생산하는 ‘문화생산 아지트’로 통의동 보안여관은 자리하고 있다.

통의동 보안여관의 역사적 의의와 동시대적 가치를 더해서 새로 만들어진 보안1942(BOAN 1942)는 보고SEE, 자고SLEEP, 먹고EAT, 읽는READ다는 사람들의 가장 근원적인 문화형태를 기반으로 시각예술 전시, 숙박, 음식, 책을 위한 다양한 컨셉트의 공간이며 생활밀착형 예술, 과거를 소환해 오늘을 이야기하며 동시대 문화예술을 생산하고, 글로벌 컬처 네트워크들과 교류하는 플랫폼이다. 우리는 이 공간을 통해 철통같은 보안의 시대를 세상의 누구도 환대받을 수 있는 안락하고 편안한 보안의 시대로 회귀하고자 하며, 예술의 공공적 가치를 믿는다.

For over 80 years, Tongui-dong Boan Inn has been a haven for travelers, fulfilling its role as a place of rest. It also served as a hub for cultural creators and art enthusiasts. The original wooden building, built in 1936, holds historical significance as the birthplace of the literary magazine Siinburak, making it a key site in modern Korean literary history. Until 2004, many artists resided there, turning it into a living cultural heritage site. Since 2007, Boan Inn has been revived as a “cultural lodge' and creative space dedicated to site-specific and daily-life-embedded art.

Boan 1942 introduces a new conceptual space, adding contemporary value to the Inn’s historical significance, centered around essential cultural activities: seeing, sleeping, eating, and reading. It features venues for visual art exhibitions, lodging, dining, and books. Using life-embedded art and storytelling that connects past and present, Boan 1942 creates contemporary cultural art and acts as a platform for international cultural exchange. Through this space, the concept of “security” is redefined—from strict protection to comfort and openness—underscoring the public value of art.
