메타볼리즘은 생물이 외부로부터 물질과 에너지를 받아 생명 활동을 유지하는 신진대사 개념을 1960년대 건축에 적용한 실험적 운동이다. 도시와 건축의 유기적 성장을 모색하며 메가스트럭처 기반의 결합·성장을 통해 생물체의 진화를 닮은 건축 시스템을 추구했으나, 기술과 자본의 한계로 이상에 그쳤다. METACORE는 이 개념을 가구로 재해석해 메타볼리즘의 건축적 가능성을 현실로 되살리는 실험적 장치로, 규격화된 모듈과 타공 구조를 통해 사용자가 빛과 구조를 자율적으로 조작하며 공간을 진화시키는 유기적 시스템이다.
