STUDIO SHINYOO | The Struggle Between Distinction and Universality
Design translator, Studio Shinyoo. Where space defines culture, time defines history. We bring those boundaries together. We design in the belief that this will connect all boundaries. We are creators and, at the same time, translators. We discover the universal values within all the historical and cultural heritage represented by life and translate them into a contemporary design language. Through professional training in architecture, furniture and design, we explore and reconstruct the relationships of multicultural behavior that take place between people and space. We continually discover new aesthetics within the grain of history and culture.

ONESEO |How I Look at Materials
In this talk, I will speak about the way I look at materials. Until now, many designers have designed products based on sayings such as “form follows function.” The approach has been to consider a product’s function first, then the form that suits it, and then the materials to realize that form. The choice of material usually came last. In this process, the advancement and spread of plastic injection molding technology relieved designers of the burden of choosing materials and gave them the freedom to focus solely on designing form. However, for us designers who now face the plastic problem along with many other issues in our physical environment, a wise choice of materials is essential, and the public also considers it important. Here, I want to talk about how I choose and use materials, together with my work. In particular, I will discuss a product design approach that starts from the choice of material, and introduce my own way of designing that departs from the “form follows function” design mentioned above.
